Germany's actual number of balcony PV systems may have already exceeded 3 million units.

The German ZSW Institute, commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency, conducted a statistical study on the current status of plug-in photovoltaic systems in Germany—commonly known as balcony PV systems. The findings reveal that, as of the end of 2024, Germany already has approximately 3 million plug-in PV systems installed, though only a small fraction of these are registered with the Federal Network Agency.

These stakeholders were asked to independently assess the ratio of registered versus unregistered systems within the plug-in PV sector. Based on their collective evaluations, ZSW arrived at the aforementioned conclusion.

For instance, in 2024, 10% of plug-in PV systems registered with the Federal Network Agency were equipped with energy storage (the proportion of systems with storage was even higher among those not yet registered). Among plug-in PV systems without storage, the most common rated power output ranged from 800 to 900W. In contrast, for plug-in PV systems fitted with storage, the rated power primarily clustered between 800–900W and 1600–2000W.

Only just under 4% were integrated directly into building facades (Fassadenintegriert).
