A young couple has the opportunity to build their first home on a plot of land that once formed part of their family’s estate. The design proposal is based on a modular approach, carefully tailored to harmonize with the surrounding environment while ensuring privacy and maximizing living space. Matadepera is a peaceful suburban town nestled at the foot of the Catalan mountains. This 600-square-meter corner lot is gently sloped, faces south, and is dotted with a few trees, flanked by two separate houses on either side.
The design team structured the houses as nine identical modular units arranged along an alternating east-west axis, while preserving the existing trees. This strategy maximizes the number of south-facing rooms and ensures privacy from neighboring buildings.

The module's flexibility and versatile connection options allow the house to function either as an open space or to be divided into distinct areas. The staggered layout enhances visual connections in all directions, creating a sense of spaciousness and fostering a strong link with the garden. At the heart of the house, the central module rises above the surrounding areas to maximize solar energy absorption during winter, while also improving ventilation in the summer.
The building features a simple structure, with load-bearing brick walls, concrete floors, and arched ceilings. The design aims to create a building with high thermal mass, combining ample solar energy absorption during winter and effective ventilation in summer, ensuring optimal thermal comfort throughout the year.
The house is connected to the garden via climbing trellises that echo the structural grid, creating an outdoor space. These trellises not only provide shelter from the elements but also encourage people to engage with the surrounding natural environment.
