Toyooka, Japan: Eco-house

This eco-house is located in Toyooka City, Japan - a core city in northern Hyogo Prefecture. It is one of 20 eco-house projects by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment.

Toyooka has cold, snowy winters, hot summers, and is humid year-round. This led to the development of a traditional house with a large, hollow space inside, known as TAKA.

The inner walls capture moisture and heat, absorbing heat from sunlight in winter and using cool night air to lower the indoor temperature in summer.

The house incorporates a solar power generation system, directly utilizing solar heat. Circulating fans control the flow of hot air, creating a more comfortable indoor environment. A small pellet stove, using biomass energy for heating without carbon dioxide emissions, is also included. Underfloor heating is installed in the void space. These systems create a comfortable indoor environment with high operational efficiency. The house also uses rainwater harvesting and reuse systems, as well as LED lighting.
