Shenzhen Rooftop Community Garden "Nanyuan Green Cloud"

This project is part of the "2021 Nanshan Community Garden" initiative, spearheaded by the Nanshan District Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau and jointly launched by the Shenzhen Green Foundation, the Shekou Community Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Most of the gardens in this initiative are located on street-level ground floors. However, this site is unique; it is on the rooftop of a six-story apartment building in a village within a city.

Global warming is a serious problem facing humanity worldwide, and countries are making many efforts to achieve sustainable development. Rooftop greening is an effective way to mitigate the urban heat island effect and is an important measure in building low-carbon cities. Through this project, the design team proposes a rooftop greening implementation plan—a simple, economical, aesthetically pleasing, and practical new model that can be flexibly replicated and applied to more rooftops.

LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) represents a "healthy and sustainable lifestyle" and is a new type of urban lifestyle value orientation emerging globally. Against the backdrop of environmental damage and the spread of infectious diseases, many urban residents are seeking a social life different from the traditional consumer era, focusing on environmental protection and their physical and mental health…More and more urban residents are attracted to this lifestyle philosophy and are interested in practicing sustainable development and community activities.

This project is a new type of community space created by combining the concepts of "rooftop greening (low carbon)" and "community-built gardens (community creation)". It is an urban spatial attempt in response to changes in this lifestyle.
