Floating Office in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Design: Powerhouse Company

In the Rhine harbor of Rotterdam, Powerhouse Company has created a floating office building (FOR) for the Global Center on Adaptation. This modern building is self-sufficient and carbon-neutral: as water levels rise due to climate change, the building will float rather than be submerged.

This is a building that combines fun and practicality. In addition to the publicly accessible waterfront space, there is even a swimming pool on the site, making the office a key element in the recently redeveloped harbor environment.

The use of wood as the primary building material significantly reduces the building's carbon footprint. The overhanging balconies provide permanent "sunshades" without affecting the influx of sunlight from the large windows into the office floors.
"Designing a sustainable, floating office building was an extremely challenging commission, and we ultimately completed the task in a comprehensive way. By using the Rhine harbor water to cool the building and using the office building's roof as a large energy field, the building has become truly self-sufficient." - Nanne de Ru, Founder of Powerhouse Company
