US imposes tariffs of up to 3403% on solar products from Southeast Asia!

On April 21, 2025, local time, The United States announced new tariffs on solar products imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

According to a decision released Monday on the website of the US Department of Commerce, The agency calculated anti-dumping duties ranging from 6.1% to 271.28% on solar products from the four Southeast Asian countries, depending on the company and country, and countervailing duties ranging from 14.64% to 3403.96%.

It is reported that the four Southeast Asian countries currently supply about 77% of the photovoltaic modules to the US. In 2024, the total value of solar equipment exported to the US reached US$12.9 billion. This tariff decision is the final result of a year-long trade investigation.

The investigation was initiated by US domestic solar manufacturers and launched by former President Biden. The investigation determined that Southeast Asian solar manufacturers were improperly benefiting from government subsidies and exporting products to the US at below production cost, causing damage to the US domestic solar industry.

While US domestic manufacturers see this as a victory, the new tariffs are likely to exacerbate cost pressures in the renewable energy sector, which is already facing policy shifts and economic headwinds. The Trump administration is attempting to revive the fossil fuel industry and continues to cut support for green projects.

About 12 years ago, after the US imposed similar tariffs on solar products imported from China, Chinese manufacturers responded by setting up factories in other countries not affected by the tariffs. This US investigation stems from a petition submitted in April by the American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee, which represents companies including First Solar, Hanwha Qcells USA Inc., and Mission Solar Energy LLC.
