Flying House
🧱 Dharamsala, India
📖 Architect: Martand Khosla

This weekend getaway home for a family of four in Delhi was designed by architect Martand Khosla, rooted in traditional materials and techniques. Situated amidst farmlands and lush forests in the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas, Flying House was built using local resources – stone, mud bricks, slate, and pinewood. Much of the earth and stone excavated during construction was reused in the building, minimizing waste from the construction site and intrinsically linking the house to its location. The mud bricks required for the building materials were made by local workers using equipment from Development Alternatives (a social enterprise for sustainable solutions in India), after receiving training. In this way, not only were local masons able to build the house, but they also gained a skill that they can continue to use in the future.
