Bahareya Village
🧱 Western Desert of Egypt
📖 Architect: ECOnsult

Egyptian architect Sarah El Battouty spearheaded the sustainable design of Bahareya Village, an eco-friendly complex for farm workers in the country's Western Desert. Serving as collective housing for farm workers employed by organic tea producer Royal Herbs, the complex uses gravel made from recycled construction waste as the base for its minimalist concrete structures. El Battouty drew on a technique from desert communities: raising the building's foundation to create distance between the floor and the ground, reducing the building's absorption of terrestrial heat and thus lowering the indoor temperature by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.
