SLAK Campus
🧱 Turkana County, Kenya
📖 Architect: Kéré Architecture

The land of Turkana County in Kenya is beautiful but arid, with low shrubs and sparse trees. Lake Turkana, Kenya's largest inland body of water and the world's largest desert lake, is located here. Towering, buzzing termite mounds dot the gently undulating landscape. These tall mounds first caught the attention of Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré as he researched the area for one of his latest commissions: a sustainable education campus on the shores of the lake. Kéré says that in homage to the local environment and the termite mounds, the towers achieve natural ventilation by "extracting warm air upwards while introducing fresh air through specially designed low-level openings." Solar panels generate electricity on-site.
