Swiss architect Manuel Herz has designed a brick extension to the Tambacounda Hospital in Senegal, a genuine Community collaboration project. Herz says, “After careful consideration, I responded that the best approach wasn’t to create a so-called architectural design ‘solution.’ Instead, I proposed a research and collaboration-based approach; not designing a building, but rather suggesting how to better accomplish the project.” Herz’s proposal won the competition. The design features a striking geometric brick facade. “For my book, African Modernism, I did a lot of research in the region,” explains the architect. “I also studied how people deal with the climate, and elements like sunshades, which were very popular in the 1960s and 70s.” In eastern Senegal, porous brick is a relatively common facade treatment, and the bricks were made on-site.
