📖 Architects: Hopkins Architects

This cluster of low, circular buildings sits on the waterfront in the Gulf region, the new Khor Kalba Turtle and Wildlife Sanctuary facilities at the Khor Kalba Mangrove Reserve in the UAE. Commissioned by the Emirates Palace Authority (EPAA), and designed by Hopkins Architects, the turtle rehabilitation and endangered bird breeding center also includes educational and visitor facilities to help raise awareness of its importance. Simon Fraser, the firm’s principal, said: “Our pioneering circular structures, designed for the Buhais Geological Park, are well suited to this rich ecological setting as they have a minimal ground impact. We adapted them with soft fan-shaped prefabricated cladding made from locally sourced reclaimed seashells. This cladding complements the marine environment and softens the building’s appearance, making it blend harmoniously with its surroundings.”
