Kampala Art Centre
🧱 Kampala, Uganda
📖 Architect: New Makers Bureau

A new Kampala art center has emerged in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. London-based New Makers Bureau, using materials such as on-site excavated and processed soil, timber, and reclaimed bricks, has built a richly patterned new home for the local arts trust 32° East. Drawing on the region's vernacular building traditions and inspired by the rock-hewn Lalibela churches of Ethiopia (subterranean rock structures carved into the ground), it has created Uganda's first dedicated community arts space in the city's Kabalagala Community. "We took inspiration from the ideas of archaeology and excavation, excavating materials on-site," says James Hampton, founder of the firm.
