Babassu Coconut Breakers Reference Center
🧱 Maranhão, Brazil Babassu
📖 Architect: Estudio Flume

The vast Babassu forests of Maranhão are home not only to a rich diversity of plants but also to the traditional Babassu oil nut harvesters. This local Community resides in northern Brazil and has worked for decades within the unique tropical humid broadleaf forest ecosystem, their daily lives and economic well-being intrinsically linked to the region’s primary crop, the Babassu palm tree. The fruit of the Babassu palm resembles a coconut, and its seeds yield Babassu oil, highly sought after in the beauty, pharmaceutical, and food industries. São Paulo-based Estudio Flume recently completed its latest public space for this Community.
