Since 2016, Atelier LUMA, a research and design laboratory located at the Luma Arles art center in southern France, has been researching material innovation projects—cultivating algae to obtain natural dyes and transforming potato starch into bioplastics. These materials also became the building materials for its renovation and expansion of the electrical workshop into new offices. London-based Assemble Studio and Belgium's BC Architects & Studies used straw, sunflower stalks, salt, soil, and limestone waste for the project, transforming them into thermal and sound insulation materials and rammed earth interior walls. This renovation project, as a prototype of a new type of low-carbon, bioregional architecture, sourced and processed almost all raw materials or recycled materials within 70 kilometers of the construction site. Most raw materials are waste from other industries, such as the sunflower oil production industry and limestone quarries, thus creating new income sources for the local Community.
