Tom Lee Park is located on the east bank of the mighty Mississippi River. Its design is a collaboration between Chicago-based Studio Gang and New York-based Scape, with Studio Gang responsible for the master plan and architectural design, and Scape responsible for the landscape and park design. The site was formerly a flat, barren riverbank wasteland, serving as a town parking lot, garbage dump, commercial transportation route, and even housing industrial buildings. At the request of the client, the Memphis River Parks Partnership, the founders of the two design firms, Jeanne Gang and Kate Orff, led their design teams to transform this wasteland into a riverside green space, urban lung, and open space that brings joy to Memphis residents.
