Built by ZGF Architects, the La Jolla, California, facility is the nation's first net-zero energy biological laboratory, helping it earn an AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Award this year. In addition to rooftop solar arrays that overproduce electricity for the grid, the structure has a 50,000-gallon thermal energy storage system.
