Case Study || Design and Installation of a Copper Indium Gallium Selenide Photovoltaic Sunroom

As green building and low‑carbon living gain increasing traction, more and more households are rethinking the value of sunrooms: no longer merely a space for basking in the sun, they have evolved into multifunctional areas that seamlessly integrate with the architecture, generate clean energy, and enhance residential comfort. This article takes the Weifang CIGS photovoltaic sunroom project as a case study, illustrating the practical application of BIPV—building‑integrated photovoltaics—in residential settings through a real‑world design and installation process. Supported by Lingchuang Xindian, the project incorporates 24 high‑efficiency CIGS solar glass panels with light transmittance rates of 30% and 40%, meeting the owner’s demands for natural lighting, aesthetic appeal, and spatial experience while delivering multiple benefits, including photovoltaic power generation, thermal insulation, noise reduction, and energy savings and emission reductions.

Design Highlight: Concealing Technology Behind Beauty and Comfort

01 Atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing, seamlessly integrated with nature

The project moves beyond the simplistic approach of merely stacking photovoltaic modules, integrating power‑generating glass with the sunroom frame to create a seamless blend with the residential façade and courtyard environment. Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) photovoltaic glass boasts a distinctive thin‑film texture that shimmers with a subtle metallic sheen in sunlight, balancing spatial openness with a modern architectural aesthetic. By eliminating the external, clunky appearance of conventional PV systems, it transforms energy‑producing building materials into an intrinsic part of the architecture itself.

02 Safe and energy-efficient, comfortable in all seasons

The project employs a triple-glazed configuration: 3.2 mm + 3 mm CIGS + 12A + 6 mm. The high-strength glass structure ensures robust overall strength, wind resistance, and durability, while delivering superior thermal insulation and soundproofing. In summer, it blocks external heat, preventing overheating of the interior; in winter, it retains indoor warmth, reducing heating energy consumption. This eliminates the traditional drawbacks of sunrooms—cold in winter and hot in summer—enabling year-round comfort.

03 Low-light power generation, stable output

Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin‑film technology boasts exceptional performance under low‑light conditions. In addition to delivering high efficiency on sunny days, it continues to generate electricity reliably in overcast, rainy, snowy, and dawn‑or dusk‑lit environments, without being limited to direct sunlight. This ensures stable, year‑round power output, providing property owners with consistent, dependable clean‑energy revenue.

04 Economical and environmentally friendly, with long-term benefits

The complete photovoltaic sunroom boasts an efficient power‑generation lifespan of approximately 25 years, continuously producing clean electricity, reducing grid‑power consumption, and lowering carbon emissions. It not only elevates the quality of living space but also represents a comprehensive investment that balances energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and long‑term returns from solar power generation.
