London, UK: Siemens’ “Crystal Building”

This is a convention center, an exhibition hall, and, above all, a window showcasing cutting-edge concepts for future cities and infrastructure.

Siemens has infused its urban and infrastructure expertise into this project; much like the “crystal” shape itself, the multifaceted vision of the city of the future will radiate a dazzling brilliance.

Beyond its remarkable structural design, “Crystal” is one of the most environmentally sustainable buildings ever constructed. The building itself also serves as a model for future cities—spanning over 6,300 square meters while setting a benchmark for energy efficiency.

Compared with similar office buildings, it saves 50% of electricity and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 65%, with all heating and cooling needs met by renewable energy. The building makes full use of natural daylight, relying entirely on daylight during the day. It also employs smart lighting technology: in a structure where most of the electricity is generated by photovoltaic solar panels, an integrated system of LED and fluorescent lights automatically switches on and off based on the prevailing daylight conditions.

Another intriguing property of the crystal is its so‑called rainwater harvesting and black‑water recycling. The building’s roof serves as a collector for rainwater, which is then treated and purified to produce reclaimed water that can be further converted into potable drinking water.
